Discussions on Morel Mushrooms. Please do not post your finds in this forum.

Do not give specific areas where mushrooms have been found. Refrain from naming street names, Business names, government buildings, shopping centers, pasturelands, when specific directions are given to a location, or any place with an address. Naming a County and or State is fine and will provide enough info for any hunter to get an idea if mushrooms are being found in their area.<br />Click here for more info: Respecting other Hunters

so after reading this post i am guessing that when it comes to presurving them it all boils down to personal prefrence? Some people say to cut them and clean them real good first and other say to just freeze them real fast. I guess what i am wondering is for someone completly new to this is there an easy/best way, assuming i get lucky enough to get enough to even worry about presurving them. sorry about spelling i suck at it

See you soon

we have always just cleaned morels, cut in half and put in freezer bag with enough water to cover, and freeze. seems to work for us.

This might be a real stooopid question but I'm gonna ask it anyway. If I were to find enough to store some I would try Roosevelts method of freezing. He mentioned breading them as an option. My method of breading them is to dip in a egg wash made up of scrambled eggs and milk, then rolling in flour. Would that breading method work for frozen morels? Just something about freezing raw egg and milk for an extended period of time doesn't really sound cool but I don't know.

Great thread!!!

i would use cracker meal for freeze frying. double wrap in saran wrap on cookie sheets for long term storage. air is the enemy.

I have some morels I want to dehydrate with my dehydrator, but I do not have a temperature control. I only have an on and off button, will it still work? What would the recommended time be, for example 1-2 hours, 3-4 hours, 15-24 hours for a dehydrator without a temperature control?

Time has nothing to do with it.you dry mushrooms till they are "cracker dry". they should be brittle and crisp like a saltine cracker.

immediately put them in a mason jar with either a dessicant packet or a teabag with rice and salt in it.

I've dehydrated several batches and it seems to work well. Just drop them in the soup andthey come back real nice

So I placed them on a screen and set that over my box fan, and ran that for a few hours also with a dehumidifier blowing on them as well, after they dried up most of the way I sliced te stems in half and winged them out to continue to help dry the inside of them. Next time I may cut a few in half and dry them like that and see if they dry better
