Hi all. I am new to the membership and am excited to get after it in my first year mushroom hunting. One question - Is there a right or wrong way to pick a mushroom? Do you just pull it out of the ground, snap it off or cut it off? I want to be a responsible mushroomer so please help me. Thanks. Wilbur55

I use a pocket knife and cut just above the soil level. To avoid possible random dangers of using a pocketknife, just pinch, twist and pull the morel from the ground. I heard the sclerotium (" a compact mass of hardened fungal mycelium containing food reserves". wiki) is located at the base of the morel just under the soil surface. Pulling the mushroom directly from the ground (w/out cutting) may leave the sclerotium attached. Some people say, pulling out the sclerotium is bad for the reproductive cycle but I dono. I suggest you serf the net for a few hours and gather together all the information you can absorb and formulate your own "new" style of picking. Good luck his year!

I cut them off at the base with a box cutter/utility knife.
I like using these because the thumb switch makes opening and closing the blade quick and easy. You can whip it out, open the blade, cut your morel, close it, and it's back in your pocket in no time. Safer than walking around with an open blade, too.

Does anyone really know! I think it is a matter of preference and any decision one comes to is ultimately his or her own anyway. For me I try to pinck the off, leaving the "stump" in the ground.Sometimes I have to use my chainsaw to speed up the process! (HA)

NEVER NEVER NEVER!!! Pull them up out of the ground. Pulling up the root ball destroys the mycelium leaving no chance whatsoever for the morel or mushroom to reproduce. Its a damn good way to destroy an area. People do a quick search at the top of the page. There are numerous discussions on this topic. [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before.

You can use scissers. I've used them a few times and found it to be easier when trying to get at those hard to reach buggers who like to snuggle up to a briar patch.

I almost always cut them. If I am not cutting I am pinching.
NEVER just pull them up.
