Discussions on Morel Mushrooms. Please do not post your finds in this forum.

Do not give specific areas where mushrooms have been found. Refrain from naming street names, Business names, government buildings, shopping centers, pasturelands, when specific directions are given to a location, or any place with an address. Naming a County and or State is fine and will provide enough info for any hunter to get an idea if mushrooms are being found in their area.<br />Click here for more info: Respecting other Hunters

Whoa!!!...Now this is a prime example of why NOT to pull the shroom up. In just a few more days there would have been more to pick.

Those are most likely aborts.

when you cultivate mushrooms, very often you get those around clusters that have grown to full size.

sometimes its caused by environment....a frost, too little water, being roughly touched or disturbed etc.

in the case of too little available moisture...sometimes the mushroom itself chooses to abort some mushrooms...and yet grow others. mushrooms are hydraulic in nature, and if the mushroom believes it only has a enough water available to successfully grow 3 mushrooms out of a possible 6...it will choose to abort 3 and transfer all its energies to the remaining three mushrooms. biologically the mushroom "knows" that getting out some spores is better than trying to grow mushrooms that are incapable of completing a full life cycle and sporulate.

cutting is the best collection method.....but its tough to say if the mushrooms in the photo would actually grow if cut as disturbing the mycelial "muff" that supports morel formation at all could result in an abort episode.

Cut it above the ground with a knife. It makes sense to remove the mushroom without disturbing it's root system in hopes that there will be enough energy in the ground to produce more mushrooms in future years. Any other method could destroy this possibility, that would be irresponsible. I have heard that cutting may produce additional mushrooms in as few as four days. I have not seen this personally yet but believe it could be possible. Certainly this would not be possible if the mushroom was ripped from the ground or damaged by pinching. Clean cutting is a good idea.

I just carry some cheap utility scissors in my pocket. Cut it up a little from the base which stays in the ground and I'm good to go.

No, those are aborted fruiting bodies. They may have possibly grown if the morels were cut/pinched above the smaller ones. The spores are stored in asci on the ridges of the morels.
