Discussions on Morel Mushrooms. Please do not post your finds in this forum.

Do not give specific areas where mushrooms have been found. Refrain from naming street names, Business names, government buildings, shopping centers, pasturelands, when specific directions are given to a location, or any place with an address. Naming a County and or State is fine and will provide enough info for any hunter to get an idea if mushrooms are being found in their area.<br />Click here for more info: Respecting other Hunters

Once you find a spot thats producing morels, how often do you check it for new ones? Once a week, every couple of days? I had someone tell me that they will not grow back in the same spot. The same person told me that you won't find blacks in the same spots as yellows either. I really don't by the fact that they won't grow in the same spot or that blacks, greys or yellows will not grow in the same area. I apologize if these are silly questions, but being a newbie I have lots to learn!

I would totally recheck your spots. I've found that after the initial pop, some of my spots continue to produce, or I have missed some. And during seasons where the different varieties grow simultaneously, like this one, you can potentially find them growing in the same area, at the same time.

Depending on the location of the spot, i check them twice in one day. sometimes the heat of the day will make some of the ones hidden grow a little and be visible. other than that i recheck my spots every 2 or 3 days depending on rain and temperature. i try to take different paths each time to avoid making a trail.

Depends on the weather. After the first pick, I usually won't check back unless there's been some rain. This year I had one spot of black morels that replenished twice, and another that never did. I think it's true that a morel won't grow back on the VERY spot it was picked before, but if the network is fairly well established underground, then others will come up in stages around the surrounding area.

Thanks for the info. I've been checking every couple of days, but keep coming up empty handed....of course it's been somewhat dry here. The last few days we've gotten some good rain and it's starting to warm up some. I'm planning on heading out on my lunch hour to check again. Hopefully I'll have some luck!
