After many years of applying, I have selected to hunt for a cow Elk in Michigan. I refuse to hire a guide, so I could use any information possible for locating these herds around the Gaylord area. I am most interested in helping out a farmer or land owner that may be experiencing property damage because of them. Of course I will do some reconnaissance on my own. Any tips would be helpful.

Congratulations on being selected! :good:

I don't know of anyone on here who has hunted elk in Michigan.

I, like many others, have applied repeatedly for the elk permit but never get one.

I myself would hire a guide. If you get selected for an elk tag in Michigan, you only get one chance. You can never get another permit in Michigan. I would consider it a small price to pay for a truly once in a lifetime experience.

From what I hear from friends that have gone before is the Elk high tail it to private land once the season hits..., a guide is the best option. Farmers do charge for hunting. Good luck

There is a farmer up towards Lewiston that doesn't charge, but, you also have to deal with guides and other hunters on his land too. It kinda gets overpopulated with hunters though and would only be a last resort. I would have to see if my friend remembers who it was when he had his hunt. He got a cow on the last day of his hunt off the property.
