I was hunting for the first time. My gun was an antique double barrel 20 gauge that my old aunt gave me. It was early afternoon and not much activity so I took a walk. On a ridge through the trees I could see a nice buck walking very slowly. I was nervous, took aim and shot. The buck kept walking slowly. I shot again. He kept his slow walk. I reloaded, someone else shot. I couldn't see the buck, but heard another shot. Later I walked up the ridge and saw that my friend was sitting in a stand at the top of the ridge. I asked to check the buck. My shot was not the killing shot. A week later we butchered the buck, my nephew was the skinner. When he got near the neck he yelled because he almost got cut by an arrow. We examined the shoulder and neck area and pulled a broken arrow from the body. Later that day I was telling a neighbor about the arrow in the deer and he claimed he was the one who shot the arrow. I called him a liar (because it was a nice buck). He claimed he knew that the arrow was broken and that he had the other half. I gave him the antlers when he produced the other half of the arrow. He had shot the buck a week before I made my missed attempt. No wonder the buck was walking so slow.
