winter oysters grow in massive clusters almost always low at the base of the tree trunk or from a root underground. the temperature has been 50 for 2 days now. this is a choice edible well worth eating.....and no bugs to compete with.i found 12 lbs last year right around this time, the conditions are right so keep your eyes peeled.

I found a dozen or so brown, gilled mushrooms about the dia. of a 50 cent piece yesterday under a pine tree next to my barn. I picked one & it seemed fresh. I didn't know they (mushrooms) grew when it's this cold.

yeah....some mushrooms even coat their cap with polysaccarides < slime coating> which act as an antifreeze so they can grow in winter. there are at least 3 edibles that grow in december < velvet foot, plurotus eryngii and plurotus pulmonarius> and i usually start seeing parrot hygrocybe around late february and early march. im sure there are others as well.......mushrooms will surprise and fascinate you with their biology time and time again.
