I don't think there is just one. National audubon field guide is good, I like Simon and schuster's guide to mushrooms and the Smithsonian handbooks mushroom book.

I just recently got George Barron's mushrooms of NENA and bessette, Bessette, Fischer's book Mushrooms of NENA. Haven't got to look thru them much but I like the Bessette book the best so far of the two.

Roger's mushrooms is good and can be viewed online here- http://www.rogersmushrooms.com/

I like the Simon and Schuster and Smithsonian books the best. Seem easier to understand but it's nice to have 3 or so to compare and make a good ID. Alot of the pics and descriptions vary from book to book.

Hey another really good one is mushrooms of North America? by Orson and Hope Miller. It covers a huge amount of shrooms and I compare it to Roger's mushrooms. He goes into more detail about poisoning and symptoms. A little technical but very informative. and easy enuf to read. Also they try to point out poisonous lookalikes more than some other books.

I was never into reading or writing but I'll do it for the shrooms!

For Morel info, Michael Kuo's book Morels is exceptional...any one read his other book?

I read Kuo's book and I was a little disappointed. I guess I expected a little more information.

I agree that the National Audubon field guide is probably the best field guide going. It takes you through the simple identification and all the way through to spore ID. I have a lot more manuals , but for a fast guide I always go to my Audobons.

One other thing that I can recommend to the starting mycologist is the page of Tom Volk's . He has done a good job of posting different aspects of mycology and most will enjoy his web page.

I hope that I am not breaking any rules here , but if I am please remove the above... though I consider his work to be of value to most mycologist.
