Just thought I would bring this thread back up front, I see many new members asking about books.
Just remember...... you can eat any mushroom ONCE

We bought a great book on the 6 most easily identified mushrooms. The name is "Start Mushrooming" written by Stan Tekiela & Karen Shanbert It gives color pictures and check off lists to make sure you have found an edible mushroom. It also talks about preserving them and cooking them. We found it very informative, and well written.

I agree with Deep Woods Hunter.Mushrooming Without Fear is a great book for the newbie looking to find shrooms other than morels. It shows and explains how and where to look and find many kinds of shrooms that wont make you sick or kill you.I added it to my arsenal last summer and had a blast finding new shrooms. Books have been on my mind since I want to expand my mushroom hunting beyond Morels. I just ordered this book from Amazon. I will post a review after reading it.

Jeff, I too agree that the National Audubon books are the best. I also have the bird book, and now I'd like to get one on flowers, trees and shrubs. We hunt morels every year and can identify most of the surrounding vegitation, but not all and would like to know that as well. Happy hunting, Deb

I'm going to be picking up a couple of books mentioned here. I'm looking at the following books after reading these reviews, in order from highest rating to lowest rating, according to this thread...
National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms Mushrooming without Fear: The Beginner's Guide to Collecting Safe and Delicious Mushrooms Mushrooms Demystified Start Mushrooming
Now I just need to narrow it down. Anybody have any comments/suggestions on the bottom 2 on this list? They were only mentioned by a couple people, but the praises were high, it seemed.
Edit: This thread was most helpful! :)

For those up here in Ontario, Canada there is "Mushrooms of Ontario and Eastern Canada" written by George Barrow a retired professor from the University of Guelph.
Another good resource is "the edible mushroom book" by Anna Del Conte and Thomas Laesoe. It's a little less regional but useful all the same. Both are available at Chapters or Indigo Books.

I just finished "How to Find Morels" by Milan Pelouch. I expected a bit more from the "where to find them" section, but was surprised to see it included some suggested cooking / storing methods.
