I just picked up Audobons book on Shrooms, altogether I have around 6 or 7 of that series.I was looking for a field guide I could carry with me.Seems I was finding so many different types on my forays I couldnt possibly bring them all home! My new Bolete woods is a good case in point. It has dozens of different shrooms growing in it and more comming up all the time. There were several more books Id like to have but spending that much money all at once wouldnt be smart.I could of easily dumped $200 on books that looked intersting, and all on shrooms!I also own Rogers Book On Shrooms,Mushrooming Without Fear, and another I cant remember its name(not a suggested read only pics of a few species). But truthfully me adding books to my library isnt anything new as I have my walls lined with bookshelves.Id have to get rid of furniture to add many more.I believe you can never know enough or have enough sources.Add the net and I can read up on anything. Anyway the Audobon book is fantastic and perfect for what I wanted.I will be adding more of all the suggestions in the future too.I mean whats a few more books to add to my 1000's of others!I will make room if I have to but that wont be for awhile yet bought another shelf at a garage sale I can fill. My library is the library and in Michigan most are connected and you can have books brought into your library from anywhere in the state. I remember I had the book "Boletes of Michigan" brought in and checked out for 6 months. It's a good way of checking out books (if they have them) to see if you like them before handing over da cash. I did a online search with just the word Mushrooms at the library site and came up with 10 pages of possibilities. http://www.publiclibraries.com/michigan.htm

David Aurora's Mushrooms Demystified has great keys and is a good standard.
The Audubon book is fine but you have to flip back and forth between picture and description and all those common names are just crazy! (Audobon insisted that they had to be in there, so the author made a lot of them up).
Unfortunately, one book is never enough. In the East, a good new book is Macrofungi Associated with Oaks of Eastern North America.
For beginners, Kuo's book of 100 Edible Mushrooms is nice but not a good field guide for mushrooms other than edibles.

I just recieved Boletes Of N.America by Bessette. What a fantastic book on my favorite shrooms! My only gripe is the pics arent linked to the text. There in order of the text but in the back of the book, not too handy so I wrote page numbers on the text and pics to make it user friendly. It also has keys specific to East and West and by genus.I also picked Mushrooms Demystified,Mushrooms of N.America by Miller, and Mushrooms Of Eastern America through Alibris books.Just a little light reading but worth every penny. I love the keys in that bolete book! I was in WV last summer and I found an interesting bolete. I keyed it out in the Bessete book and it came up with NAB something (sorry I cannot remember the exact number right now-- NAB means North American Bolete and they are the unnamed ones). So, I am thinking, OK, I really screwed up the key thing. But I looked at the description and it says "found only in WV..." Those keys are extensive and very well written. That being said, I still find boletes that leave me scratching my head. The book is pricey but a great addition to your collection if you are serious about mushrooming past the morel season. I love a good, tasty bolete! (Plumbeoviolaceous?? )
