Post subject: oysters now.....other stuff later
PostPosted: June 3rd, 2005, 6:12 pm

actually oyster season is in full swing here in indiana , i find a few every other day or so just driving different ways to work. I found them while i was driving around looking for a good campsite in a camp ground. because we are a little dry here they are stunted. normal rainfall would make clusters that are 2-3 lbs or <rarely> 4-6 lbs. this year im finding like 8 oz to a lb at a time. enough to eat but no huge bonanza. ive seen ubellatus and a few "others" out at this time of year but so far just oysters. ill hunt anything that tastes delicious....hence i skip pheasant backs and velvetfoot and stuff like that.

I picked some oysters today behind the family farm. Seems the neighbor has been finding them for some time. I had no idea. He claims to like them more than morels. He eats them deep fried. Guess I'll find out what I think of them tomarrow night after work.
Not sure about deep frying them, though. Will the 'ol butter & flour be ok?

you CAn deep fry them....i personally like to saute them in bacon fat ,garlic, and some chopped shallot, deglaze with some sweet white wine like kabinet or gerwurtzraminer and serve them on grilled chicken or pork.
Unfortunately oysters are one of those mushrooms that dont dehydrate or freeze well , so eat em while they are fresh and enjoy them.

Well, they didn't kill me, so I guess I will add them to the "ok to eat" list. I must confess, greys, I didn't have the know-how or the ambition to use your suggestion on how to prepare them. So.... they just went into the deep fryer in drakes. Hard to describe the flavor. They weren't morels, but I will definately eat them again. I should be able to enjoy them more, too, not waiting & wondering if I'm going to be sick later. I am the type that on occasion can talk themselves into feeling things that aren't really there - if you know what I mean.

Going to buy a couple books & branch out this year.

Thanks

Sounds like me when I ate my first morel. even though I new without a doubt that it was a true morel, I was so paranoid about eating it. I swear I started feeling dizzy, But it was just in my head. I think this is why I haven't really got into the the other types of shrooms. I don't have anyone to go with me that knows jack about the other types. I just don't want to go off a picture on the internet either. I am just freaky in that way.

It actaully took me two days to eat my first morel. Just a couple bites at a time. LOL.

Call me over paranoid if you will.

wow i must have brass bawls or something.....i eat all kinds of stuff < after sporeprinting and cross referencing 4 or 5 books of course>, and i field taste too....break off a small chunk and nibble on it then spit it out. I do know that no mushroom is deadly enough to kill with just one nibble and no mushroom that i am aware of on the north american continent can transmit chemicals through handling. remember folks....deadly gallerina and amanitas cause 90% of mushroom poisonings. learn to ID these and you will cut down on your chance of poisoning yourself. Im no toadstool tester < as aurora terms those who taste the unknown frequently> but im not really ambivelent about trying a new shroom either. BTW identifying mushrooms is more than just sporeprints and pictures....learn to use the keys provided in fieldguides...they do help. I think woofer has an addy for a set of keys that you can use in windows on your box as well.
