Another good way to learn is to walk down and just start casting all over everyone else's lines. JK! You'll learn something.
But, most of the folks I've met on the river, piers and such are generally pretty friendly and helpful. That's where I learned everything, just going down there, watching, being friendly, but not too friendly, and asking questions. I like BS'ing with the old timers and old schoolers.

Its not that difficult to catch the steelhead. Go to any bait store and get a jar of spawn sacks, rig your bass rod up with a small hook like what you would use for bluegill. Put a sinker about 18 inches above. Hook the spawn sack just at or above the knot of the mesh where it is tied. Cast into the river and let it drift down stream. In my experience the best places to fish them are in the deeper wholes, you can find them on the curves. When they hit you will know it. The fight is great. You want to use 6 to 8 lb test mono line but be prepared to get caught on snags and rocks and loose hooks. Check your michigan book and make sure that you can use any bait in the area of that river before you go out using spawn sacks though. Good Luck.

Good advice Joe Thanks.
No Chuck I never made it out. I got all caught up in rebuilding my deck. Just like the morel season I missed out. Just now getting my fishing license so I can take my boys fishing. My younger has been asking when we are going so we are making plans for this weekend for some gills and crappy.
