Regardless of the ash borer, there are still a few live ash in my area of the thumb. None of which have produced a morel for me. I think they are green ash but not sure. Are all ash trees hosts or does the white ash reign supreme? And does anyone know what ash is dominant here in the thumb? [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

The White ash is definately the best, but you can find them around black ash as well. There are some green ash in my area, but few. I've never found any around them though I'm sure they might be productive in the right area. You probably know already, but the green ash have the deeply pocketed diamond shapes and a slightly greenish brown color to the bark. The black ash has small diamond shapes and a very "tight" appearance to the bark. I've found blacks around black ash a lot. There are places up north that I know that do best around them in lower pockets in the hills. Yellows are less abundant, but also grow around the black ash.

Based on my tree field guide, i am guessing these to be green ash. They are similar to the white ash we hunt up north, but not quite as tall and the diamond shape isn't as distinctive. Also the bark is more "flakey". Am i wasting my time on these trees? It seems like the bark of white ash is actually darker in color than the green ash but it doesn't appear that way in my book. White ash by far where most of my finds take place. The white ash are abundant in upper lower MI.
Here are a couple white ash that produce every year for me.

Nice trees indeed! You should take me there for a closer look! It's a shame, my area is loaded with ash but i believe it is all green ash. No morels by these 3yrs running. Chuck,
I deer hunt in the thumb and I always notice a lot of dead elms. Dead can be huge producers.
Find some dead elms with the bark beginning to peal. You may have to check 50 elms but one good elm can produce a load.

That's good stuff todd!!! A good piece of ash is hard to come by! I do hit some elm and apple trees for greys and yellows. My goal is to put some blacks in my bag without making the long trips up north. As much as i enjoy it, it really conflicts with my schedule. Guess i'll have to kiss some more ash for time off again!!
