Discussions on Morel Mushrooms. Please do not post your finds in this forum.

Do not give specific areas where mushrooms have been found. Refrain from naming street names, Business names, government buildings, shopping centers, pasturelands, when specific directions are given to a location, or any place with an address. Naming a County and or State is fine and will provide enough info for any hunter to get an idea if mushrooms are being found in their area.<br />Click here for more info: Respecting other Hunters

We have overnight temps predicted in the low 20s this coming week. How do you think this will effect the morels that are up and those which have not yet popped? There must be all kinds of activity going on just below the surface as they are getting ready to fruit. Does this weather have the potential to kill this activity?

from the books I've read, if the mushrooms were starting to come out, the 20's in the forecast up here will probably butcher the flush. I'll cross my fingers against it though!

So all you veteran hunters and mycologists, will this ruin our season at least for the blacks? I can't get northwest until next weekend, will it be a waste of time and gas?

Morels do ok with a light frost...if they are up already it may give them a "burned" top and stall growth...but it doesnt affect them adversely in terms of taste.

Frost severity can depend on whether the canopy is foliated in the woods you're hunting. If the canopy is foliated it can protect morels from severe frost damage.

Thanks for the advice! Do you think we are jumping the gun a little to hit the north woods next weekend? With all these reports coming in, i know our spot will have some. But with gas prices, we don't want to go all that way for a couple dozen! Thanks greysrdbest!

I wouldn't bet on anything this year. The weather has made predicting anything pretty much moot.
