Post subject: False Start to Morel Season? Posted: March 24th, 2012, 2:00 pm

I live in North Central Indiana, and it has been hot here, with there being 5 or 6 days with 80+ weathers, the trees are starting to bud and greenery is coming up. It hasn't rained much until this weekend. And I see in the the forecast says it going to be in the mid 50s - mid 60s for the next week. with no rain till next weekend. I've been out hunting everyday for the last 2 week with no luck at all. Could the warm weather have cause a false sense of hope that morels would be popping or could the heat killed them off this year. i see on the progression maps they are being found in Michigan, so i would think they would be up here. with the weather getting back to normal, could the morel season get back to a more normal schedule?

I follow the progression every year, duh I update the map , and can predict the growth areas fairly well and when they are optimum for a certain area. The morels start in GA, CA, and other southern states. Then work their way up to KY, SC, VA, southern OH and Indiana, Next they move to IL, PA, and western Lower Peninsula of Michigan skipping mid OH and IN. When they start progressing fairly well through the Upper part of Lower Penn. of Michigan and central MI, then they start in Mid-upper OH and IN.

It is usually close to that pattern every year. It is what I follow to chase those MI morels. I know when to look and where to look to get me a taste by following reports.

Thanks Michael, this could be a good rule to follow as weird as it sounds. It will help me to decide when to head up to northern MI. It sounds as if I could be successful up north, come home and be just in time down here in southern MI. Good to know, thanks!

The reason it does this is that the SE lower penn. and areas of northern ohio and Indiana usually only gets greys and whites.

Bingo!!! Mjmh that is a great post! You have made my day! (and ruined it at the same time) i have scoured my area of the thumb for three yrs killing myself in search of the black morel. I knew it! They don't even grow here do they! I pick them out well up north so i know what i'm looking for. I've been to every ash and bta tree in this county and they just aren't here. I always have one or two people tell me they are here, so i kept at it. I do ok on greys and yellows here but not once have i ever seen even an old expired one! I knew it! I have made many posts looking for this answer and someone always claims my area has them. So, the question is, what is the reason for this? [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
