Hi everyone,
I'm Amy,I live in Hudsonville. I am married with 5 children age 16,14,12,8 and 7. We have 2 daughters and 3 sons. We have a mini-farm here and raise chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits and pigs. We eat all of our own meat and eggs. We are outdoor lovers. My husband Eric hunts. I grew up mushroom hunting with my mom and my husband grew up doing the same with his mom. Last Spring was the first Spring we actively hunted in our adult lives after finding ONE morel in our front yard. We hunted the woods behind our house for hours and never found a Morel. We really want to get into this and are trying to learn as much as we can about it. We love mushrooms. I will be back to post more later on. I was wondering does this forum talk all year around or just at hunting season? Hope to get to know some of you. I've been reading at the website for hours tonight and looking at pictures and decided to check out the message board too.
Have a great day!
Amy :bigrin2:

Hi Amy, Welcome to NCM :welcome:

You have definitely come to the right place. Everything you need to know about morels can be found on this site.

This forum is open year-round. Most of the activity is during March through May, but there are a lot of people here who are on throughout the year. After morels are over, people talk about summer and fall mushrooms, fishing, hunting, or anything else. There are sections on the message board for all of these activities.

Feel free to jump into the conversations and get started.

Hey everyone!
Thank you for the welcome. I've got so many questions and I can't wait to read more on mushrooming and read more on all these topics once I get my post count quota. Do any of you do the stumpers mushrooms? I had a friend that brought us over 2 bushel a couple years ago and I washed them all and froze them..we ended up cooking with some and I HATED them. :dd: They were too gritty/grizzly I don't even know the word to use. None of the kids or Eric liked them either. We deep fried them in a homemade batter and also put some in a homemade veggie/beef soup and I could not stand them either way. We could not find anyone that wanted them,so we fed them to the pigs. I was so sad to do it. I could not believe how many stumpers her dad found bushel after bushel. Can morels be found in that huge quantity?

If you're lucky you can find morels in that quantity. Probably everyone here dreams about it.

I myself have never hit a "mother lode" of that proportion, but try every year.

There are better quality mushrooms out there than stumpers. Before I joined this site I was just a morel hunter. Now because of this board I have discovered the awesomeness of chanterelles and chicken of the woods. :bigrin2:

Welcome Amy. I have chickens, too. Six girls and I just love 'em . . .

I recommend joining a local mushroom club if there is one near you. It's one thing to read about anything in a book or on the web but their is no substitute for 1st hand experience . . . just my opinion.

Welcome again!!

Welcome to NCM and ''Stumpies'' are best picked when really young. They lose alot as they get older and that is what Im figuring you had. Although I dont care much for them anyway you cook them so far I try again at least once every year. And as the others said some of us are hear and hunting Shrooms all year! I have picked Oysters and Velvets December,January,Febuary,March, etc, etc. And oh my the rest of the year I pick at least once a week from the many varieties that grow in the woods.Yup Im a certified addict and its contagious!!!

Never heard of stumpies, but if you want to find a lot of morels... I like to just walk and walk through the woods until you find one, then there tends to be more. Stick to the deer trails, I think.
