The Peterson Field Guides are good books!!I have quite a few in the series but passed on there Mushroom Guide.Mostly because for the price they charge there are alot better books available.I will add it though eventually because I can never have too many books!! I have been buying books off Alibris and my Shroom Library has grown considerably at low investment. You can get NEW guides for a great price if you look and watch for them.

I would like to lodge another vote for both
"What the rain promises and more"
by David Arura.
and the Audobon Field Guide to Mushrooms.

Both are excellent books to take out in the field to help identify whatever fungus you find lying around :)

I just stopped by Borders (going out of business 20% all shroom books) and picked up two really good books
North American Mushrooms: A field guide to edible and inedible fungi by Dr Orson Miller and Hope Miller
Mushrooms and Other Fungi of North America: The most comprehensive mushroom guide with over 1000 color photographs by Roger Phillips

They have great color pix with great descriptions. I will look at these other books people are recommending!

find the tree..find the Morel? amazon doesn't know that book :(

Did just order How to Find Morels by Milan Pelouch.

though I don't think any book is going to help me figure out WHEN to head north to hunt THIS year!

Just go to the library. You also should check with your state Department of Natural Resources. There are species of bad shrooms located in different regions.

I'd have to say The mushroom hunters field guide by Alexander H Smith, and Nancy Smith Weber. I like it for a beginner. Easy to navigate and understand plus there is even a list of mushrooms beginers should start with in the back of the book.

on the hunt!

I have 11 books in my mushroom book collection. Three of these are on medicinal mushrooms. If you are new to mushroom hunting, I think a great book for anyone just starting out is "The Complete Mushroom Hunter" by Gary Lincoff. It touches all of the bases without overwhelming the reader. It is well written and enjoyable. Anyone who is just starting out should focus on the major edible and/or medicinal mushrooms. This book will get you there. This is my 2 cents for what it is worth.

I have 20 (modern) actual books on Shrooms and probably around 50 Ebooks. The old out of date ones are kind of cool to read but for actual ID I probably have 20 or so to thumb through. And one must not forget the good ole internet as there are many, many sites that you can learn from that are almost as good as a book.Truthfully some are actually better but I like my books.
