Hi I have lived in Michigan most of my life but just recently started mushroom hunting here. I lived in Ohio for a few years and did hunt occasionally down there. I have been out a few times this year and have had a little success. I would appreciate any help that anyone can give me. I also used to do a lot of ginseng hunting in Ohio and that was very enjoyable. Thanks!

Well.. as far as help goes.. I would look near trees with large black flakes for bark and those that are deeply and tightly furrowed. Blacks like the flaky trees and everything else seems to like growing near the deeply furrowed ones.

Thank you and I am trying to learn the trees better. I also need to get a reasonably priced GPS so that I can venture into unknown territory.

your best bet in northern michigan is probably hunting live ash trees. As for a gps. Garmen is my suggestion. The more inexpensive ones are around 120$. Make sure to take always take a compass. They never run out of batteries or lose thier bearings in the hills
