I go for the elm forests up there. There are a lot in the northern lower peninsula.

are you going for blacks or whites?
Blacks: maple/ash mixed woods in big hills. Find yourself a big valley and walk along it hunting the little valleys that make up the sides.
Yellows: dead elms, dead elms, dead elms! find yourself a good patch of dying or recently dead elms with plenty of shade, and you've got a prime spot. They come late season.
Whites/Grays: I was going to post a question about that too. What trees do you NCM fellows find them under in northern MI??

After finding some greys this weekend, I think there are no rules left to morel hunting. They were in the middle of a field, with no elm/ash/popple around. The closest stand of trees were birch...as in white paper birch which i've never had luck around...ever. I found them by accident, heading home. The season seems off here...either not enough moisture or it's too cold, maybe too early. Black are finished, and the whites are so scarce it's as if they haven't started yet.
